ABS-CBN hits DOJ Decision on Stampede

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday released a statement that criticized a Department of Justice decision to charge network employees, including two executives, for the Philsports Arena (formerly ULTRA) stampede in February.

"ABS-CBN maintains the innocence of its officers and production staff in connection with the charges filed by the Department of Justice for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides and physical injuries," the statement said.

The company also maintained that there is no evidence to support the decision of the DOJ.
"It is ABS-CBN's position that there is no evidence to support the DOJ's decision. Thus, ABS-CBN will take the necessary legal action to reverse the decision and to protect its officers and production staff," the statement added.

A DOJ panel that conducted the probe on the stampede during the "Wowowee" gameshow's anniversary named the respondents as Charo Santos-Concio, Channel 2 boss and network executive vice-president; Socorro Vidanes, head of TV production, Cipriano Luspo, chief of security; Wowowee host Willie Revillame; program producer Marilou Almaden; and other Wowowee staff.

The network officials will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries.

Aside from the ABS-CBN officers, two other officials from ULTRA and three from Goldlink Security and Allied Services will also be charged.

The ULTRA stampede claimed the lives of 71 Wowowee fans. The justice department said that the incident could have been prevented.

"That's why it’s called reckless imprudence, reckless negligence, they weren't able to do the necessary precautions to prevent what happened," Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said.
DOJ's 70-page resolution detailed the culpability of each respondent.

Part of the resolution said that Concio failed to exercise care in the management of the event as executive vice-president.

The show’s host Revillame, meanwhile, is liable for "enthralling the people with fabulous prizes."

The DOJ panel, meanwhile, recommended a separate preliminary investigation for Pasig City Mayor Vicente Eusebio and members of the city’s police force and security detailed at ULTRA to determine if they are also liable for the tragedy.

Although open sana ang GMA sa idea na bigyan ng show ang dalawa dahil naniniwala naman si Ms. Wilma na parehong magaling na artista sina Jericho and Heart.

Ms. Wilma also emphasized na never silang nag-pirate. Kung marami mang taga-ABS-CBN na artista nila ngayon, lahat daw ‘yun ay lumipat sa kanila at hindi pirate.

Flor de Luna

ABS-CBN’S revival of the 80’s hit “Gulong ng Palad” was such a toprater it’s no wonder they’re reviving another hit soap from RPN-9, “Flor de Luna”. (We won’t be surprised then if GMA-7 would also revive their former hit, “Anna Liza”.)

The new “Flor de Luna” will be directed by Jerry Sineneng, who was convincing as a film director exploiting macho dancers (is this true to life, Jerry?) in “Twilight Dancers”. Playing the title role that made Janice de Belen a household name then is Eliza Pineda, best known as the daughter of Piolo Pascual in “Till There Was You”. Playing her mom (Emma Yuhico then) is Vina Morales and the stepmom (Laurice Guillen then) is Eula Valdez. Originally tapped to play Vina’s role was Kris Aquino, but she demurred when she got preggy. Still to be cast is the role of the dad (then played by the late Dindo Fernando) and the brother Reneboy (then played by Herbert Bautista). A very important role is that of the villainous Donya Agueda (then played by Carmen Enriquez). Our suggestion is they now get Laurice to play that role as a nod to the original series.

ABS-CBN stars banned sa GMA at QTV!

Dahil sa nangyari (Jericho and Heart's supposed transfer to GMA), nagbaba ng memo ang management ng network addressed sa production managers at talent coordinators na ’wag munang kukuha ng mga artista mula sa ABS-CBN para i-guest sa mga show ng Channel 7, pati sa QTV 11.

Hinayang na hinayang ang isang magaling na comedian na nakilala sa Dos dahil hindi matutuloy ang guesting niya sa isa sa mga sitcom ng Siyete.

Excited pa naman ito at role agad ang tinanong, hindi ang talent fee. Hindi alam ng aming source kung hanggang kailan effective ang advisory na ito.

Napikon na raw ang Channel 7, kaya hindi lang para kina Heart at Jericho ang memo, kasama na ang ibang talents ng Dos na puwede sanang lumabas sa mga show ng Siyete at QTV 11.

This Eigenmann chooses to be Kapamilya

Most of the Eigenmanns are Kapuso.

You see Mark Gil in Atlantika and his son Gabby Eigenmann is a fixture on the Sunday noontime variety SOP and every now and then plays a role in the network’s primetime drama series. Cherie Gil is la primera contrafigura in the afternoon soap Now and Forever: Dangal.

AJ Eigenmann, Michael de Mesa and Gina Alajar’s son, is in Pinakamamahal, an afternoon soap weekdays on the Kapuso network. But his brother, Geoff Eigenmann, has chosen to be on the other side.

Recently, Geoff signed with ABS-CBN Star Magic family. And the move is considered by fellow Kapamilya as a homecoming of sorts. After all, as a little boy, Geoff was in the very popular Ang TV. He was only eight years old then.

Coming from a reputable family of actors, Geoff’s decision to be like his parents didn’t come as a surprise. In fact, it had been anticipated that he’d follow in the footsteps of Michael de Mesa and Gina Alajar.

As a kid, more than a decade past, Geoff used to tag along his parents to tapings. His education in show business was already beginning then. His interest in what his parents did for a living soon became part of his consciousness as he began to be part of show business. Yet, his biggest break would be a starring role—not in a television show or a motion picture—in a television commercial for Globe.

Not a few noticed the good looks and the charming uneven lop-sided smile. In just a span of two weeks, people are talking about this guy up in the mountains who needed a load for his mobile phone.

What followed was a dizzying baptism into the realm of show business. He landed a role in ABS-CBN’s Hiram with Anne Curtis, Dina Bonnevie and Kris Aquino. Not long after that soap had concluded, he is in Ikaw ang Lahat Sa Akin with Claudine Barretto, Diether Ocampo, Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz.

From television, he hopped onto the movie bandwagon with a starring role in two blockbuster movies—Becuz of U and the recent First Day High—both from Star Cinema.

His potential as an actor has become obvious, yet Geoff doesn’t want to be confined to just creating characters. He also wants to be known as Geoff Eigenmann. And so he is accepting a hosting stint in ASAP Fanatic with Luis Manzano and John Prats. He is also one of the VJs of Studio 23’s MYX and regular hosts in ASAP ’06 every Sunday.

Another big role is coming for this Eigenmann. He will play a prisoner named Cyrus in the forthcoming series Rounin.

Isn’t there a movie titled Ronin with Robert De Niro? I wonder if there’s any similarities? Nikki Gil (no relation to the Eigenmanns) is going to play Geoff’s love interest in the series.
Like all Eigenmanns, he is passionate about his craft. His greatest dream as an actor is to be able to work with his parents in a TV series or movie.

Geoff was recently given a grand welcome in ASAP ’06s “Full Circle” segment, which features the artists of Star Magic.

Court of Appeals rules
criminal raps may be filed vs ‘Wowowee’

The way is clear for the Department of Justice to pursue criminal charges against executives and employees of the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. in connection with the Feb. 4 stampede at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City that left 71 people dead and more than 600 injured.

“This court finds that the grounds and reasons [stated] have been already considered, discussed and passed upon in the questioned decision. Hence, there appear no valid or cogent reason to disturb, reverse or modify [it],” the court said.

Is Bituing Walang Ningning really that bad?

I, by no means, want to start a fight but I chanced upon two articles (both from Inquirer) with negative write-ups about the recently concluded "sineserye" of ABS-CBN. While, Nestor Torre's article has some merit, how can one say about the other whose entire article is based on a single scene he saw on tv. But then again, to each his own. Sharing the articles here:

The Stretch Marks Show

NOW THAT “BITUING WALANG Ningning” has finally faded to black on our TV screens, we can more objectively and comprehensively evaluate its long run on ABS-CBN.

First conclusion: It’s downright amazing how the people behind the show were able to stretch its slim movie story into a months-long drama series, full of emotional highs and lows, dramatic twists and turns, and melodramatic tics and schticks at every turn.

The result of all that stretching was sometimes discombobulating, however. Characters ended up contradicting their initial nature, the struggle between good and evil became too ferocious for words, and performances were either insufficient or over-the-top.

Most insufficient of all was Sarah Geronimo’s portrayal of the series’ lead ingenue, Dorina. Sarah is a good singer, but she wasn’t able to make her character dramatically compelling and empathetic, opting instead to play her as a weeping victim practically from beginning to end.

At the other, over-the-top end, the show was able to do the seemingly impossible—make a bad actress out of the much-admired Amy Austria.

The fine thespian was cast as the mother of Dorina’s rival, Lavinia, and was required to do such dastardly things that believability flew out of the window.

GMA Films announces film project with Mega

A horror movie starring Sharon Cuneta is the next project of GMA Films, according to the film outfit’s president, Annette Abrogar.

In an exclusive interview with Inquirer Entertainment last week, Abrogar said Cuneta was also interested in co-production ventures with GMA Films.

“We don’t have anything signed yet,” Abrogar admitted. “But we’re sure this deal would push through, knowing Sharon.”

The actress, who has been dabbling in movie co-productions lately, has embarked on similar ventures with Unitel Pictures, the latest of which is “Las Visa Loca,” starring Robin Padilla.

Abrogar said Cuneta’s first movie with GMA Films would be shot in HD (high definition) format.

“We’re doing this for the special effects,” Abrogar said. “A horror movie calls for a lot of special effects.”

She said shooting might start in October.

Mega says

In a text message to Inquirer Entertainment, the actress confirmed that nothing has been set on paper. “It would be nice to work with GMA Films,” Sharon said. But, she has to meet with Abrogar so she can see the script and decide if she likes it .. and then “fix my suddenly out-of-whack schedule.”

Philippines' Next Top Model

Ruffa Gutierrez made a lightning visit to the country to sign a contract with Solar Entertainment as host of "Philippines’ Next Top Model." She’s based in Istanbul, Turkey, with husband Ylmaz Bektas and two daughters Lorin and Venice.

The show is the Philippine edition of a reality-based modeling contest which started in the US and expanded all over the world. The Philippine edition will air early next year, but this early Solar led by Wilson Tieng is already preparing the groundwork for what is expected to be the biggest modeling contest in the country.

Ruffa’s equally pretty mom, Annabelle Rama, negotiated with Wilson and even persuaded the possessive Ylmaz to allow Ruffa to host "Philippines’ Next Top Model."

New Hosts for S-Files?

MALAKAS ang bulung-bulungan na magkakaroon ng “rigodon” sa hosts ng S-Files ng GMA dahil dalawang buwan na pala itong pinapataob sa ratings game ng kalabang The Buzz ng ABS-CBN.

Siyempre, hirap aminin ng source naming taga-S Files mismo ang chikang mahina sa ratings ang kanilang show kaya magkakaroon ng mala-king pagbabago sa nasa-bing talk show sa mga darating na Linggo.

Ang “idinahilan” ng aming kausap ay gagamitin lang daw ang S-Files sa pamamaalam ng isang host na tatakbo for politics (na sure nang si Richard Gomez), may host rin daw na mag-aasawa (si Pia Guanio kaya ‘yon?) at may mag-abroad muna (will that be Joey Marquez or Paolo Bediones?).

True kaya ang chika na panay ang meeting nga-yon ng GMA execs dahil lagi ngang tinatalo ng The Buzz ang kanilang Sunday afternoon talk show samantalang dati’y parang “see-saw” ang ratings, na minsan ay nakakaungos pa rin sila sa talk show nina Boy Abunda, Kris Aquino, at Cristy Fermin?

Bituing Walang Ningning Finale

STANDING ovation, masigabong palakpakan at malakas na tilian ang ibinigay ng audience sa ending ng showdown nina Dorina Pineda (Sarah Geronimo) at Lavinia Arguelles (Angelika dela Cruz) sa Bituing Walang Ningning na ginanap noong Martes ng gabi sa Araneta Coliseum.

Humanga kami sa husay nina Sarah at Angelika dahil tuhog ang kanilang mga eksena pero hindi sila nagkamali kahit minsan. Hindi biro ang tuluy-tuloy na pagkanta nila habang umaarte at umiiyak sa stage.

Bago kinunan ang finale ng Bituing Walang Ningning, nagkaroon muna ng blocking at rehearsal ang buong cast ng drama series ng ABS-CBN. Maaga kaming dumating sa Araneta Coliseum kaya napanood namin ang rehearsal nina Sarah at Angelika.

Sa rehearsal pa lang, napaiyak na ang dalawa, pati na sina Zsa Zsa Padilla at Ai Ai delas Alas. Napaiyak si Angelika nang isabit sa kanya ni Sarah ang sampaguita pagkatapos magpaalam na ‘yon na ang kanyang huling pagkanta.

Eksaktong 7:30 pm nang mag-umpisa ang taping para sa ending ng sinusubaybayang drama series ng ABS-CBN. Bago sinimulan ang taping, binigyan ng instructions ang audience na kailangang ang mga pangalan nina Dorina at Lavinia ang kanilang isigaw.

Naging cooperative ang manonood. Actually, totoo at hindi na acting ang pagpalakpak at pagsigaw nila sa mga pangalan nina Dorina at Lavinia habang kumakanta ang dalawa.

Dahil na rin sa galing ng mga artista, nag-iyakan ang manonood dahil sa mga makabagbag-damdaming eksena kahit walang intensyon ang mga artista na paiyakin ang audience.

Kasama namin si Lolit Solis sa panonood ng grand showdown nina Sarah at Angelika. Hindi itinatanggi ni Lolit na paborito niya ang Bituing Walang Ningning at nagpunta rin siya sa Araneta Coliseum bilang suporta sa kanyang mga alaga na bahagi ng cast, sina Tonton Gutierrez at Amy Austria.

"Ang cheap ko, ha!" ang dialogue ni Lolit habang pinapahid ang mga luha na dumadaloy sa kanyang pisngi dahil nadala siya sa mga eksena nina Sarah at Angelika.

Maraming TV camera ang ginamit nang kunan ang finale ng drama series. Sigurado kami na nakunan ng kamera ang pag-iyak ni Lolit at ang kanyang walang patid na pagpalakpak habang kumakanta si Sarah.

Nang gabing ‘yon, isang fan at hindi TV host o talent manager ang aming nakasama. Hanggang ngayon, nakatatak sa isip namin ang walang patid na pagpalakpak ni Lolit kahit walang dahilan para palakpakan ang ilang eksena na pinapanood namin.

In fact, sa rehearsal pa lang, hindi nag-iisa sina Zsa Zsa, Ai Ai, Angelika at Sarah sa pag-iyak dahil mula sa kanyang kinauupuan, umiiyak din si Lolit na 4 pm pa lang ay pumunta na sa Araneta Coliseum.

Nag-feeling cast member ba ng Bituing Walang Ningning si Lolit Solis? Well... sort of!

Network Takes on Education

ABS-CBN has come a long way. From airing the first variety show ‘Student Canteen’ in the 1950s, the Philippines’ premier media company is bringing broadcasting to a loftier level: education.

The Knowledge Channel, launched in 1999, is ABS-CBN’s educational TV channel, supplementing learning in elementary and high school in more than 1,600 public schools throughout the country. In partnership with the Department of Education, KC has been providing lessons in Math, Science, Philippine History and other subjects to about 2.7 million students. A long way to go from the 40,000 public schools nationwide with 17 million students, but as KC President and Executive Director Elvira ‘Rina’ Lopez-Bautista, 46, concedes, “There is an educational crisis; the government can’t do it alone.”

Lopez-Bautista said she is harnessing the “resources of my family’s company” in organizing KC.

“As soon as I came up with the concept I approached my Dad. He said this is something that’s really needed,” Lopez-Bautista told Philippine News. “Education is everybody’s business.”

KC offers the more than 1,600 public schools weekly lessons on a variety of subjects, from Algebra to Noli me Tangere. The lessons are conducted in Tagalog for elementary students and English for high school students.

Studies have shown, said Lopez-Bautista, that students’ retention and comprehension have increased 25% in schools where KC televised lessons are available, and that results in national assessment tests have risen more than 100%.

“Parents note that children are excited to go to school,” she said. “When parents and schools get involved in students’ learning, magic happens.”

She shared the story of Hilmarie, a young student in a rebel-infested province. The young girl comes from a family with no radio or television. Hilmarie’s only access to media is KC’s cable TV.

Sometimes, said Lopez-Bautista, “it takes a carabao to transport dishes and other cable equipment in provinces where there are no roads.” In some provinces with conflict, the rebels leave the equipment alone, she added.

Donations can go a long way, she told a Filipino American audience at the Philippine Consulate in New York. A $20 contribution, for example, can pay for the printing of five sets of teacher study guides, or $144 can finance a training workshop for three teachers. $3,000 is the cost of a complete satellite connection package.

“We look for the funds. We set it up in public schools for free, and make sure the channel is used properly,” she said.

KC won’t replace the teacher, she stressed to Philippine News.

Star Cinema Hits the Spot

HE Filipino film industry hasn’t gotten over its long slump, but Star Cinema has heartened movie buffs (and ticked off its rivals) by coming up with one hit after another. A few months ago, it ruled the box office with “Sukob,” its blockbuster chiller, which is reported to have grossed a locally stunning P200 million.

Comes now “You Are the One,” a romantic comedy, which made an impressive P11 million on opening day. Its strong showing was made even more noteworthy by the fact that its leads were new stars (Sam Milby and Toni Gonzaga).

In “star-crazy” Philippines, it’s unusual for new leads to generate full houses, so the movie’s feat is indeed impressive.

How does Star Cinema make profitable lemonade in a movie season of lemons? Some rivals grumble that the studio’s feat isn’t all that great, because much of it is the result of the fact that it can advertise its films on its popular sister TV network, ABS-CBN.

But, some other producers have also gone the big TV-plugging route and haven’t done nearly as well as Star Cinema. So, the studio must have other strengths going for it aside from its massive exposure on television. What could those plus points be?

We observe that the studio gears most of its cinematic products to the youth, young-adult and/or women markets. This is a canny move because the country’s demographic is predominantly youthful—and there’s also a big market for female-friendly films, most of them romantic comedies and melodramas.

Visual gloss

Star Cinema is also known for good technicals and production values, resulting in a visual gloss that’s dependably attractive to viewers.

Then, there’s the studio’s appealing stable of young contract stars, many of whom have been nurtured on ABS-CBN shows since they were children or adolescents.

This has made them familiar faces to the TV-film audience, and this familiarity, happily enough, has bred, not contempt, but a profitable fondness—and viewer loyalty.

For these and other reasons, Star Cinema is currently making the most number of motion pictures among local film companies, despite the tough times that the local movie industry continues to endure.

To be sure, many of the studio’s movies are not that strong in terms of significance of content and theme. But it does occasionally come up with substantial films like “Milan” and “Santa Santita” that help balance the desultory equation.

Star Cinema is also to be credited for giving breaks to new directors. On the other hand, the studio is rapped for its “committee” style of making movies, with all of the members of the committee throwing in ideas, some of them contradictory, to make the film project appeal to all niche markets of viewers.

All told, however, Star Cinema’s report card ends up on the plus side, as the studio continues to generate some light and energy to revitalize the still struggling local film industry. May it, as well as other production companies, continue to prosper.

Three Week Extension for BWN

Sometime ago, we were told that the toprating soap, Bituin Walang Ningning, with Sarah Geronimo as Dorina and Angelika dela Cruz as Lavinia, will end with a gigantic concert of Dorina.

They told us that this concert will be shown live -- not tapes like the other past episodes -- at the Araneta Coliseum. This is scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Well, they’ll go on with the show at the Araneta for the Bituin soap but it won’t end there.
This means that Bituin will be extended in its ABS-CBN slot until October. A three week extension as it enjoys good ratings.

Anyway, ABS-CBN is preparing two soap series at present to his television later this year.
There’s Maging Sino Ka Man with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis and Sam Milby, scheduled to hit the tube next month.

Also, Walang Kapalit which Wenn Deramas is currently directing, with Claudine Barretto, Piolo Pascual, Dina Bonnevie and Amy Austria.

In fact, we got wind of plans for Walang Kapalit to do some tapings in Australia just as the current Crazy For You had its taping last August in Barcelona, Spain.

PDA: First Scholar Expelled

Gemma Fitzgerald of Australia became the first pop star aspirant to be kicked out of ABS-CBN’s reality show Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) on Saturday after getting the lowest number of votes from other star dreamers.

By a vote of 10-3, Fitzgerald was evicted from the academy, saving fellow nominee Honora "Oona" Barretto of Bukidnon.

The climax of PDA's first expulsion night unfolded after 18 star dreamers were asked to choose who between Fitzgerald and Barretto should remain inside the academy. Two other nominees, Kristoffer Abrenical of Canada and Rosita Barreng of Dubai, have been saved by viewers' text votes and the PDA faculty.

One by one the PDA scholars were called to reveal their choice while facing the two remaining candidates for eviction.

Eat Bulaga Losing in Ratings Race?

We got hold of figures on the latest TV ratings. Wowowee! Every one of us had to take a second (and third, and fourth) look at the numbers, incredulous at what we were seeing. One of the writers remarked, “How did it happen?” The question sounded more like a protest over the incredibly high ratings of Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba and Wowowee had posted last Sept. 1.

Indeed, it’s hard to imagine Wowowee and Pilipinas, Game KNB edging Eat Bulaga in TV ratings. But among audiences who are subscribers to Sky and HomeCable that’s exactly how it is.

Cable ratings data among Sky and HomeCable subscribers last Sept. 1 alone reveal Wowowee and Pilipinas posting cable ratings of 21.7 and 22.3 points, respectively. The longest-running noontime show, Eat Bulaga, on the other hand, got only 10.1 rating points.

Malou Choa Fagar of Eat Bulaga can only shake her head in disbelief.
Yet, among noncable subscribers, Eat Bulaga posted a high of 25.6 rating points compared to Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba’s 16.6 and Wowowee’s 13.9 points, respectively.

Honestly, I myself can’t comprehend the figures and the seemingly inexplicable disparity of the ratings between and among households with cable and those without.
Households with cable connections are supposed to belong to economic classes that normally wouldn’t bother with local shows, much less noontime show. It seems that the research firm conducting the survey is telling us a different story.

Well, that might be true if the respondents in the survey are homogenous and they happen to be all fans of both Kris Aquino and Willie Revillame. But, that’s statistically improbable!

Question: Just because Sky Cable and Home Cable are both owned by the Lopezes, does it mean that they can tamper with the cable ratings? Is it really improbable that cable subscribers prefer Game KNB over Eat Bulaga? The former is by far more intellectually stimulating than the crazy circus that is supposedly the number 1 noontime show in the country.

Nakakuha ng 34.4 percent sa Mega Manila at 34.5 percent sa Metro Manila (ang pilot ng Bakekang). Kitang-kita na kinarir nga ni Shine ang serye dahil first episode pa lang, nagpakita na siya ng husay sa pagganap. Sulit naman lahat dahil sa mataas na rating na nakuha ng programa.

Samantala, ang rating naman ng pilot episode ng Crazy for You ng ABS-CBN starring Luis Manzano at Toni Gonzaga, na nagsimula rin last Monday, ay 23.9 percent sa Mega Manila at 26.7 percent sa Metro Manila.

Nag-abot ang dalawang programa sa timeslot, pero natamaan din ng Bakekang ang nauunang programang Bituing Walang Ningning habang nag-abot naman ang Crazy for You at ang Koreanovelang Love Story in Harvard.

Bituing Walang Ningning got 28.3 percent sa Mega Manila at sa Metro Manila naman ay nakakuha ito ng 30.4 percent. Nakakuha naman ang Love Story in Harvard ng 24.5 percent sa Mega Manila at sa Metro Manila naman ay 25.5 percent.

Ayon naman sa kampo ni Richard, hindi daw valid ang akusasyon ng PNSA tungkol sa pag-uugali lalo na isa lang daw itong opinyon. "“Kung gusto nila ako mawala sa PNSA, the attack shouldn't be personal. It has something to do dapat with a wrongdoing against the association,” ayon kay Gomez."

Metro Manila viewers find

GMA Network most credible

Leading broadcast company GMA Network has maintained the highest trust rating among Metro Manila viewers, according to a recent survey conducted by Pulse Asia. Pulse Asia’s July 2006 “Ulat ng Bayan” survey reported that GMA Network registered a high trust rating of 70% in Metro Manila, followed by its biggest rival which posted a rating of 59%.

The network’s overall trust rating across the country also slightly improved, with Mindanao posting the most significant gain of 13 points. More impressively, according to the survey, public distrust for the Network significantly declined across the country to a mere 7%.

Meanwhile, Pulse Asia’s probe on GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs programs revealed that 7 out of ten Filipinos nationwide find the programs credible. As in the case of its perceived trustworthiness, Pulse Asia reported that GMA Network registered its highest credibility rating in Metro Manila at 81%.

GMA News and Public Affairs top rating programs include primetime newscast 24 Oras, Saksi I-Witness, Reporter’s Notebook, 100% Pinoy, Debate, Emergency, Imbestigador, Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, among others.

According to Pulse Asia, the country’s urban centers deliver a higher credibility for the Network’s news and public affairs programs at 75% than the rural areas taken as a whole, which posted 63%.

It is also interesting to note that the younger age groups appear to have a more positive view of GMA Network’s news programs. GMA Network recorded a 76% credibility rating among the 18 to 34 years old age group.

GMA Network also posted a higher credibility rating among college graduates at 76% than among those with an elementary education at best (64%). Pulse Asia also reported that across the country, television is most cited by the respondents as their primary source of news at 85%.

John Lloyd and Sarah sa MMK

As early as Wednesday, write-ups have been released regarding the Asia Agcaoili episode on Magpakailanman. Interesting to note that nothing has been said about the casting of it's rival show, Maalaala Mo Kaya, which I believe more than deserves the buzz that Magpakailanman has been receiving.

Part of GMA's claim to fame for being the number 1 network today is the fact that it has been aggressively promoting all it's shows in every tabloid. I think it's high time ABS-CBN do the same.

Asian TV Awards

Between GMA and ABS-CBN, the former dominated the Asian TV Awards last year while the latter had to face just a single nomination and bagging no trophy. Will this year be the same? It's unfair, says Filomena Coching, widow of Francisco V. Coching, creator of the komiks classic Pedro Penduko. She is bewailing the fact that her husband's name is not included in the TV advertisements for the new ABS-CBN show, Komiks Presents: Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko, scheduled to premiere on Sept. 9.

The oversight is glaring, Ms Coching says, considering her late husband's stature as dean of komiks novelists. Pablo S. Gomez, another veteran novelist and whose Kampanerang Kuba was recently serialized on ABS-CBN acknowledges that Coching is among the Big Four in the komiks industry, along with Mars Ravelo, creator of Darna; Clodualdo del Mundo Sr., Prinsipe Amante; and Tony Velasquez, Kenkoy.

Darna bore Ravelos name when it was serialized on GMA 7. Kampanera carried above-the-title billing for Gomez as well.

When ABS-CBN was conceptualizing a Penduko series, network representatives approached the Coching family, according to her. But we found out that, by virtue of our most recent contract with Viva, we no longer owned either the story or the title Pedro Penduko.

So the network negotiated with Viva instead. Ms Coching hoped that the new show would revive interest in her husbands work, but she saw that the TV ads didnt even mention his name. When she complained to Viva, she was assured that the network would put Coching's name in the credits once the show starts its run. Meanwhile, she sighs, her husband who was nominated for National Artist four times goes unrecognized, except for a single mention in a press release just over a week ago about the contract signing between Viva and ABS-CBN.

Super Inggo: Fantastic Salvo

A lot of kid viewers will surely identify with title-roler Makisig Morales as the boy who dreams of being a superhero without knowing that he really has a super hero father, Super Islaw (played by Zanjoe Marrudo.)

The show gathers all the recent fantasy characters in local films. Super Islaw was originally played by Richard Gomez. Also in “Super Inggo” are Super Inday (then played by Maricel Soriano, now by her niece, Meryll), Petrang Kabayo (then played by Roderick Paulate, now by Empoy Marquez), Machete (then played by Cesar Montano and Gardo Versoza, now by Derek Ramsey), Jessa Blusa of “Blusang Itim” (then played by Snooky, now by Zaira de la Pena) and Kumander Bawang (played by Herbert Bautista then and now.)

The first episode shows how Budong (Makisig) discovers his super powers that make him Super Inggo, awakening the villainous Prince of Darkness (Brad Murdoch) who then searches for him to kill him. Makisig is perfect as Super Inggo and he gets good support from Jarius Aquino as Jomar, his sidekick who looks so cute on screen, and “Little Big Star” champ Sam Concepcion as teen superhero Boi Bawang.

We notice, though, that Makisig and Sam’s leading ladies are bigger than them: Kathryn Bernardo as Maya (who plays Mark Anthony Fernandez’ ‘babaeng bakla’ daughter) and Empress Schuck as Ava Avanico (whose weapons are her razor-sharp abanikos.) Makisig and Sam are both lean while the two girls are both plump on screen.

Also in the cast are Nova Villa as Makisig’s imperious grandma, Angelu de Leon as his mom, plus Kaye Abad, Alwyn Uytingco, twins Felix and Dominic Roco and Andrew Muhlach (half-brother of Aga.) The special effects are all executed well and viewers will surely be thrilled as Super Inggo fights the kampon ng kadiliman like the White Lady, the Tikbalang and Lotus Feet of “Feng Shui.”

Since I like Toni and Sam, let me make an exception and post an article about their movie.

TONI AND SAM: THE MUCH-AWAITED TEAM UP IN THIS SEASON’S BIGGEST LOVE STORY!

For the longest time, Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby have been linked together but it seems time and circumstance prevents them from pursuing a relationship… but in Star Cinema’s latest love offering, “You are the One”, Sam and Toni proves that love has no boundaries.
